Celebrating African Art

The Myma Art Prize (MAP) is a bold new platform celebrating the next generation of visual artists from Ghana and Nigeria. Named in honor of Dr. Myma Belo-Osagie (renowned lawyer, art collector, and patron) and endowed by her children, the prize offers more than funding: it offers a journey.

Each year, MAP will identify and support early to mid-career artists. MAP will provide a virtual artist development program, high-profile group exhibition for finalists, and physical residency in Benin, Nigeria, for the grand prize winner.

Coordinated by Metis Capital Partners and curated by Ugonna Ibe of Yenwa Gallery, the Myma Art Prize is designed for lasting impact. Selections will be made by a rotating panel of artists, curators, and scholars drawn from West Africa and the diaspora, with the aim of launching careers and shaping the future of contemporary African art.

Our Story

The Myma Art Prize was born from a personal collection. Dr. Myma Belo-Osagie acquired work by Nigerian and Ghanaian artists at a time when few galleries existed: in street markets, artisan stores, and through personal relationships she has nurtured across a lifetime. Many of her pieces came from then-emerging artists whose practices she continued to follow, returning to their work as it developed. Her collection is the result of a careful eye, early investment, and passion.

Her children are building a prize in her name with broader ambitions. MAP aims to create the infrastructure that West African artistic production has long deserved: a collector pipeline, curatorial relationships, archival investment, and most importantly, a community of artists who can make a living making art.
